SRINAGAR: To mark the ceremonial beginning of the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra this year — slated to start on July 1 and culminate in mid-August — Jammu & Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday attended the “Pratham Puja” via videoconferencing while connecting with devotees worldwide. Meanwhile, IG BSF (Kashmir Frontier) Ashok Yadav, while speaking to reporters at an event in Srinagar, said a coordinated security grid will be put in place to ensure an incident-free pilgrimage this year.
While melting snow may open traditional infiltration routes along the Line of Control (LoC), BSF along with other security agencies will ensure that all possible infiltration bids are foiled, IG Yadav assured. “Amarnath Yatra is going to be conducted under the supervision of the UT administration and police. BSF has prepared for its role as per requirement. Our men will be deployed at strategic and vulnerable locations. Our quick response teams will also be stationed along the route in case of any natural disaster,” he added.
LG Sinha said: “Shri Amarnath Shrine Board along with the UT administration has made elaborate arrangements for a smooth pilgrimage this year. I urge the people of Kashmir to cooperate in making the Yatra a success.”
A record footfall will help improve the UT’s economy further besides boosting pilgrim tourism, said Sinha. About the Yatra route, the LG said the Border Roads Organisation has done excellent work and “in the next few days, the road to the shrine will be through”.
