PUNE: A monsoon outing in the backwaters of Bhushi Dam in Pune’s Lonavala turned tragic for a group of 15 from two families as five of them drowned in a waterfall near the dam on Sunday afternoon, reported.
The picnickers from Sayyadnagar in Pune’s Hadapsar were playing in a stream of the dam when 10 of them began to slip into the waterfall as the volume of water rose.Locals managed to rescue only five of them.
Pune Rural SP Pankaj Deshmukh told TOI, “There was a flash flood-like situation after heavy rain in the hills where the families went for a picnic. Bodies of a woman and a 13-year-old girl were recovered in the afternoon. That of an eight-year-old girl was recovered in the evening.”
Police issued an advisory to tourists going to the picnic spot not to venture into its waters. But the group ignored warning , said DSP Sathya Sai Karthik.
