NEW DELHI: Congress leader and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia on Tuesday amid speculations that the wrestlers might be nominated as party’s candidates in the upcoming Haryana assembly elections.
The Congress party shared a photo of the meeting on its official social media account.

The Congress Central Election Committee had convened on Monday and finalised the names of 34 candidates for the Haryana assembly elections.Deepak Babaria, the AICC in-charge of Haryana, said that the final list of candidates would be released by Wednesday. He also acknowledged the speculation surrounding Phogat and Punia, indicating that it would be addressed soon.
Phogat and Punia, along with fellow wrestler Sakshi Malik, had previously leveled serious allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). They accused him of sexual exploitation and intimidation, demanding his resignation and the dissolution of the federation. The WFI has categorically denied these allegations.
The Election Commission has scheduled the Haryana assembly elections for October 5, with the counting of votes set to take place on October 8. The polling date was revised from the initially planned October 1, and the counting for both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana assemblies was rescheduled from October 4 to October 8.
