Sources said the history-sheeter, who recently walked out on bail, had been pressuring the deceased’s sister to drop her complaint against him.
KANPUR: A 30-year-old man whose sister was a witness in a case against a notorious history-sheeter who is out on bail was beaten to death in a busy street in Shastri Chowk area of Kanpur on Friday.
The brutal attack on the victim, a drummer, was carried out by a group of men, allegedly at the behest of the history-sheeter who had been pressuring the deceased’s sister to refrain from testifying in the case against him, said police sources.According to the deceased’s sister, the accused was released on bail 15 days back. A purported video of the attack has gone viral on social media.
According to sources, the attack took place while the victim, along with his sister, was returning home after lodging a complaint against the criminal. The siblings had approached the police to file a complaint after receiving threats from the assailants.

The deceased succumbed to injuries during medical treatment. Police have sent the body for an post-mortem examination and are awaiting a formal complaint to proceed with the investigation.
DCP Ankita Sharma said, “We are currently awaiting a formal complaint from the victim’s family to initiate further legal action against the perpetrators.”
A substantial police force has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, the DCP said.
