1. Union Cabinet approved the implementation of Merite Scheme

On August 8, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to implement Merite in 275 institutions across the country, Multidisiplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education Scheme.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed about the implementation of Merite Scheme in a cabinet briefing.

  • Merite Scheme will be implemented in 175 engineering institutes and 100 polytechnic colleges.

  • It will be implemented as a central plan.
  • A total of Rs 4,200 crore will be spent in the next 5 years.
  • Out of this, 2,100 crore rupees will be received from the World Bank as a loan.

2. Successful test of Asia’s longest freight train ‘Rudra Shastra’

On August 7, Indian Railways successfully tested Asia’s longest freight train ‘Rudra Sharan’.

The freight train is 4.5 km long.

  • These tests were done by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (DDU) division of East Central Railway of 4.5 km long goods train.
  • During this time, it was done from Ganjkhwaja station in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh to Garhwa Road in Jharkhand.
  • During this, the distance of 209 km was completed in 5 hours 10 minutes.
  • Rudraha, built by connecting three long hole goods train, includes 354 wagons, 6 racks and 7 engines.
  • However, the record of the world’s longest freight train is with the BHP company of Australia, whose train is 7.5 km long.

1. Fees Regulation Bill 2025 passed in Delhi Assembly

The fee regulation bill 2025 has passed 2025 in the Delhi Assembly on 8 August. Its objective is to stop arbitrary fees hike in non -government schools in Delhi.

During the debate, 17 proposals were brought for amendment from the opposition party, but they were rejected.

Now after passing the assembly, the bill will be sent to the Lieutenant Governor for approval. After approval, the bill will be implemented as law.

After the law is enacted, this bill will not only curb the arbitrariness of private schools, but will also ensure transparency, justice and accountability in the education system.

2. NCERT set up a panel to review the map dispute

Staff Selection Commission i.e. SSC postponed the proposed Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination 2025 from August 13. This exam will now start from the first week of September. The revised exam schedule will soon be released on the Commission’s website ssc.gov.in.

In its latest notice, the SSC has also given clarification on several issues. The Commission has written in the notice that in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court, many improvements have been implemented in the computer based examination system from the selection post Phase-13 Exam 2025. In this sequence, Aadhaar verification has been made mandatory for candidates so that copying and other disturbances can be prevented.

During the selection Post Phase-13 exam 2025 held between July 24 and August 2, several candidates were deprived of taking the exam due to technical and other reasons. After the data analysis, it was found out that there are flaws in the data of about 55 candidates. The Commission has decided to give all these candidates a chance to appear in the examination again on 29 August.

Earlier, SSC Phase 13 is constantly facing protests over disturbances in the examination.
