The tenure of the Senate was completed on 31 October
In a letter written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the MP informed about the ongoing movement demanding holding of Senate elections in Panjab University. He said that despite the tenure of the Senate ending on October 31, elections are not being held. He has said that such deliberate efforts are being made to keep the people of Punjab out of participating in the university functions.
Punjab does forty percent funding
Explaining the role of Punjab in Punjab University, the MP said that currently 201 colleges of Punjab are affiliated to the university and are contributing Rs 200 crore annually in examination fees with 40 per cent funding. The remaining 60 per cent funding comes from the central government, largely from taxes collected from Punjab, he said. He said despite these important historical and economic contributions, the delay in the Senate elections and efforts to centralize control under the New Education Policy 2020 threaten the autonomy and legacy of the university.
