A fleet of more than 200 buses has been running on cows for the past several years in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. This means that the fuel used in these buses is made entirely of cow dung. The city of Karachi has a bus network called Green Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) that uses dung to run its buses.
These buses run on cow dung i.e. bio methane gas. There are more than 4 lakh cows and buffaloes in Pakistan. The project was also financed by the United Nations-backed Green Climate Fund and the Asian Development Bank. In this, bacteria react with cow dung to produce gases like methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur dioxide. Methane is separated. It is then transported to the CNG tanks at the bus depot.
With this unique project, it is being claimed to reduce not only air pollution but also water pollution in Pakistan. Let us tell you that the excreta and urine of dairy animals reach the sea through rivers and the water sources are continuously getting dirty. According to the report, about 3200 tons of dung and urine are thrown into the sea every day in Pakistan. Even just flushing and cleaning it wastes over 50 thousand gallons of water.
In Karachi these buses ply in a 30 km corridor. Thousands of people travel through them every day. For this, 25 new bus stations were built, with modern pedestrian crossings, footpaths, cycle lanes and even bicycle rental facilities. These buses are running successfully in Karachi. Cow dung is being better utilized. Soon such buses are going to run on the roads of cities like Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Faisalabad. These are green buses with zero percent pollution. The entire project is estimated to cost approximately $583 million, of which the Green Climate Fund is providing approximately $49 million.
This organization is an international organization that helps countries with funding and plans to reduce pollution.
