Ladakhi shepherd who alerted army about Pakistani incursion in Kargil dies

The man who first alerted the Indian Army about the infiltration of the Pakistan Army during the 1999 Kargil war has died. Giving information, the Leh-headquartered 14 Corps of the Indian Army on Friday posted on ‘X’ about Namgyal’s sudden demise and said, “His invaluable contribution to the country during Operation Vijay 1999 will be written in golden letters.” We express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family in this hour of sorrow.”

‘Operation Vijay’ is the military name for the May-July 1999 war with Pakistan.

Who was Tashi?

Tashi Namgyal was a Ladakhi shepherd looking for his lost yak when he saw Pakistani Army soldiers among Pathan groups digging bunkers atop the Batalik mountain range. About which they informed the Indian Army about the Pakistani incursion in the Kargil sector due to which India retaliated.

Tashi Namgyal is credited with providing the first input to the Indian Army regarding the infiltration of Pakistani troops in the Batalik sector in 1999.
