New Delhi, 24 December
The Congress has challenged in the Supreme Court the recent amendment in election rules to prevent public scrutiny of certain electronic documents and expressed hope that the apex court will help restore the “fast-eroding” credibility of the election process. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that he has filed a writ petition.
Ramesh posted on X, “A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recent amendments in the Conduct of Elections Rules-1961.” Ramesh said, “The Election Commission is a constitutional body. is It has the responsibility to conduct free and fair elections, so such a brazen amendment of this important rule cannot be allowed unilaterally and without public consultation.”
Ramesh said that the credibility of the electoral process is fast eroding and hoped that the Supreme Court would help restore it. He had said last Saturday that this amendment will be challenged legally soon.
The central government amended the election rules to prevent public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage as well as video recordings of candidates to prevent their misuse. On the recommendations of the Election Commission (EC), the Union Law Ministry has amended Rule 93 of the Conduct of Elections Rules-1961 to prohibit ‘papers’ or documents etc. from being kept for public inspection. -News-Patiala
