After the municipal elections, the circumstances for the mayor’s throne are constantly changing. Congress is not only faced with the challenge of gaining majority, but the growing influence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also a matter of great concern. 4 for majority in this Municipal Corporation with 85 wards
.
Congress leaders are continuously shirking the blame by saying that the High Command will decide the name of the Mayor. But no one is ready to speak on how the majority figure will be touched. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party has the support of 5 MLAs along with the existing 24 councilors. At the same time, most of the 8 MLAs whom Congress is talking about in its favor do not want to go against the present AAP government. Due to which it is becoming difficult for Congress to move beyond 40.
AAP preparing to play politics again in 2022
AAP After forming the government in Punjab, despite being the Mayor of Congress, he had overthrown the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. This time also AAP is preparing to play on the same basis. AAP did not have a single mayor of its own in 2022. Ahead of the elections in 2022, AAP had fielded the then mayor Karmachjit Singh Rintu in its favor. After this, Congress and BJP councilors were overthrown one by one in their favor.
Efforts to bring Azad to one’s side intensified
According to an estimate, AAP is now trying to get 8 independent councilors and the winning candidates of Akali Dal in its favor apart from its 24 councillors. By doing this AAP will touch the figure of 37. After this, his eyes are also on those Congress councilors who can support him in his desire for power and position.
AAP has also shared this plan with the high command and can implement it after getting the green signal.
Before the 2022 assembly elections, Amritsar Mayor Karmjit Singh Rintu had joined AAP. AAP had overthrown the Amritsar Municipal Corporation as soon as it came to power.
Congress faces challenges even with 40 councilors
The Congress, which currently has 40 councilors, needs the support of independent councilors and smaller parties for a majority. There are three big problems facing Congress:
- Stand of independent councilors: Independent councilors are playing the role of kingmakers in this election. But the councilors do not want to go against the ruling party.
- Internal discord: There are indications of opposition from some councilors within the party. In fact, almost half of the Congress councilors do not agree with the name being put forward for the post of Mayor.
- Opposition alliance: If you take Azad councilors and Akali Dal councilors along, then the path of Congress will become difficult.
