In the financial year 2022-23, the total voluntary contribution to the PM Cares Fund has reduced to Rs 912 crore. This is the lowest amount since the formation of this public charitable trust in March 2020 following the Covid-19 pandemic. Audit details on the website of the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) Fund show that the voluntary contribution reached an all-time high of Rs 7,184 crore in 2020-21. After this, it reduced to Rs 1,938 crore in 2021-22.
It further declined in 2022-23 as the threat of Covid subsided. The financial year 2022-23 is the last year for which details are available on the website. Foreign contributions also declined sharply, from a peak of Rs 495 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 40 crore and Rs 2.57 crore in the next two years respectively. In the financial year 2022-23, the total expenditure was about Rs 439 crore, of which Rs 346 crore was used by ‘PM Cares for Children’. It is a government initiative to help children who have lost their parents or legal guardians in the Covid pandemic.
