SCHEME
1. One Nation, One Subscription scheme started from today: The Central Government launched the ‘One Nation, One Subscription (ONOS)’ scheme today i.e. from January 1.
ONOS aims to make it easier for students in higher studies to access research papers and academic journals.
- With this, students and researchers can easily access more than 30 major international journals through one digital portal.
- ONOS will be operated by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), which comes under the University Grants Commission (UGC).
- Under the ONOS scheme, a budget of Rs 6 thousand crore has been allocated for a period of three years.
- This scheme will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, more than 13,400 journals based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Medical, Mathematics, Management and Humanities will be made available.
2. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana to continue till 2025-26: The Central Government approved the continuation of Pradhan Mantri Crop Insurance Scheme and Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme till 2025-26.
This decision was taken in the cabinet meeting held on the first day of the new year i.e. 1 January.
- Also, the cabinet announced to give additional subsidy of Rs 3850 crore to the companies manufacturing DAP fertilizer.
- The allocation for crop insurance scheme has been increased to Rs 69,516 crore.
- A budget of Rs 824.77 crore has also been allocated to expand innovation and technology in the agricultural sector.
- 9 states are in the process of implementing WINDS. This includes Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Assam, Odisha, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.
International
3. Ban on wearing burqa in Switzerland from today: In Switzerland, from January 1, a ban on women covering their faces completely with hijab, burqa or any other means in public places came into effect.
In the referendum held in Switzerland in 2021, 51.21% citizens voted in favor of banning the burqa.
- For violating this law, a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs i.e. approximately Rs 96 thousand will be imposed.
- Before Switzerland, laws regarding this have also been made in Belgium, France, Denmark, Austria, Netherlands, and Bulgaria.
- After this law, women will not be able to cover their faces completely in public places like public offices, public transport, restaurants, shops and other places.

4. Rajat Verma to become CEO of DBS Bank India: Rajat Verma was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DBS Bank India.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the proposal to appoint on December 31.
- Verma will succeed Surojit Shome, who will retire on February 28, 2025.
- He will take over as CEO from March 1, 2025.
- Verma heads IBG Bank India Institutional Banking Group (IBG) from June 2023.
- DBS is the largest bank in South East Asia.

5. Great Place to Work status for Steel Authority of India Limited: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has received the ‘Great Place to Work’ certificate for the period from January 2025 to 2026.
SAIL gave this information by issuing a press release on 30 December.
- SAIL has received this certificate for the second consecutive time.
- Earlier this certificate was given for the period from December 2023 to 2024.
- ‘Great Place to Work Institute’ is a global organization, which evaluates the employee experience and gives the Great Place to Work certificate.
6. New time table of Indian Railways came into effect from today: The new time table of Indian Railways is now effective from January 1, 2025.
There have been changes in the timing of many trains. Besides, the numbers of many trains have also been changed.
- Earlier this change used to happen every year on 30th June and came into effect from 1st July.
- This is the 44th edition of ‘Trains at a Glance (TAG).
- Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (Vande Metro), two Amrit Bharat Express trains will be run in the year 2025.
- 64 Vande Bharat trains started in 2024. A total of 136 Vande Bharat train services are running on the Indian Railways network as of 26 December.
- Apart from this, efforts will be made to equip Railways with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2025.

7. Manipur government will give loan up to Rs 50 thousand to the people affected by violence: Manipur government will provide loans up to Rs 50,000 without any collateral to the people displaced by caste violence under the ‘Entrepreneurship Support Scheme (CMESS)’.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced this on 31 December.
- Loans have been given to support approximately 426 displaced people under CMESS.
- 7 such startups have been identified, which are ready to provide employment to 432 displaced people.
- Additionally, the target is to provide loans up to Rs 10 lakh with 30 per cent subsidy to 5,000 beneficiaries under the ‘One Family, One Livelihood Scheme’.

8. West Bengal won Santosh Trophy for the 33rd time: West Bengal has won the title of domestic football tournament Santosh Trophy for the 33rd time on December 31.
In the final match, West Bengal defeated Kerala 1-0.
- Hansda was also the highest scorer in this tournament with 12 goals.
- The final match of this tournament was played at Gachibowli Stadium, Hyderabad.
