Chandigarh, January 3
Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Food Processing Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian said here today that collaborative initiatives will be encouraged and open new avenues to include alfalfa in the fodder system of the state to address challenges related to fodder production. He participated in a conference organized by Punjab Agro Industries Corporation Limited (PAIC) in association with Namost Innovators LLP (NSI) and Team Athena at CII’s Northern Region Headquarters here today.
Khuddia said on this occasion that Alfalfa has been cultivated in 60 acres in Ladowal (Ludhiana) by Punjab Agro. The minister said that Punjab Agro has partnered with Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to provide information to farmers about proper nutrition of animals. He said growing alfalfa forage has many benefits, including higher nutritional content and improved animal health.
Jagunur Singh Grewal, Additional Managing Director, PAIC, said that alfalfa fodder can be sown once and harvested six to eight times per year for three years and can improve the farming system. Dr. Alfalfa and Forage Extension Specialist from University of California Davis. Daniel H. Puttam shared information on best practices in alfalfa forage cultivation globally.
