New Delhi, January 8
India has extended the visa of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina has been living in India since August last year. Although the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not yet made any official comment on this, but according to sources, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRO) has been informed about the extension of Hasina’s stay in India. The FRO comes directly under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and has a record of visas issued to all foreigners.
Hasina’s visa has been extended at a time when Bangladesh’s interim government has been continuously demanding India’s extradition of Hasina. The Bangladesh High Commission has sent a formal notice in this regard and the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, has also confirmed the receipt of the notice. It should be remembered that Sheikh Hasina left the post and came to India in an army plane after the student protests over the disputed reservation turned violent. Sources said Hasina’s visa has only been extended, but that does not mean she has been offered political asylum. Hasina has been kept at an undisclosed location in Delhi under tight security.
