India Sent Rice To Bangladesh: India has recently sent 16,400 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh through water, causing business relations between the two countries, even though there is increasing tension at the political level. Two ships with this rice arrived at Mongla port on Saturday. Bangladesh has signed an agreement to buy 300,000 tonnes of rice from India, out of which 40% of the rice will be sent to Mongla port and the remaining rice to Chittagong port. In this sequence, 16,400 tonnes of rice consignment arrived at Mongla port on Saturday. The rice came from Dhamra port and Kolkata port in Odisha.
According to the Dhaka News-Patiala, the Panama flag ship BMC Alpha brought 7,700 tonnes of rice from Odisha, while the MV Sea Forest with Thailand’s flag reached Bangladesh with 8,700 tonnes of rice from Kolkata.
Business relationship continues amid political tension
Although tension has increased in political relations between India and Bangladesh for the last few months, it has not had any significant impact on business agreements. In August 2024 last year, the relationship between the two countries has come to a standstill since the removal of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. Despite this, rice trade and other business agreements are going on between the two countries.
Sheikh Hasina issue: The main cause of stress
Protests against Sheikh Hasina and her government have been the main reason for Bangladesh’s political instability. Hasina had to leave Bangladesh after major protests in August 2024, and has been living in India since then. Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against Hasina in serious allegations, including murder cases.
Diplomatic note sent to India
Dhaka has sent a diplomatic note to India demanding extradition of Hasina. This issue has further increased the tension between the two countries, especially for fencing on the border. Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has said that he will try to cancel some border agreements with India in February, but till now it has not affected the trade.
Business relations between India and Bangladesh
The consignment of rice in trade relations between India and Bangladesh has once again shown the strength of the economic relations between the two countries, while political issues and border disputes have been the cause of tension. The issue of Sheikh Hasina may also increase this tension, but the business is currently going on.
