Telegram: The Vietnam government is soon preparing to ban the popular messaging app Telegram. According to Bloomberg report, the government alleges that this app is promoting the spread of illegal content in the country and not following local rules. The Ministry of Public Safety of Vietnam says that many telegram groups in the country have become the base of content which are related to serious cases like anti -government activities, fraud, drug trafficking and illegal data business. According to officials, Telegram has not followed the government’s instructions to stop these activities or monitor the content, nor has it registered its official commercial presence in the country which is mandatory under the Vietnamese Act.
What is the reason
The government has instructed the Internet and telecom service providers to stop telegram services. However, so far there has been no response from Telegram or Vietnam’s Technical Ministry. This step is part of the comprehensive policy of Vietnam’s monotonal government to increase control of digital space. While global platforms like Facebook and YouTube are still available in the country, the government is taking a tough stand against online disagreement and unauthorized content. In the year 2023, Vietnam made it mandatory for foreign social media companies to verify the identity of the user and share this information to the government when needed.
Future of telegram
Although critics believe that these steps are towards curbing freedom of expression, but the government claims that these measures maintain the stability of the country and maintain law and order on digital platforms. At present, the future of Telegram seems to be uncertain in Vietnam, as the government has made it clear that it will not tolerate the platforms that do not run as per its rule.
