The most commonly used mobile network in Iran is Hamrah-E-VAVAL or IR-MCI, which is called “first partner” in Persian. The company came into existence in 1993 and is under the control of the Iran government. Today it has more than 7 crore users. It provides 2G, 3G and 4G services across the country and now 5G testing has also started.
The government operates Hamrah-E-VAL, which is considered to be completely suitable for the security, data control and monitoring of the country. This is the reason that most Iranian citizens use this network.
In addition to Hamrah-E-VAL, two more major networks work in Iran. Irancell (MTN Irancell): It is a joint venture of the company of Iran and South Africa MTN. This is especially popular among data users. RIGHHLEL: This network is mainly known for 3G services and is now working towards 4G expansion.
Iran follows a controlled digital system. Here foreign companies do not have an open exemption to enter the telecom sector. There are many important reasons behind this. Many countries including the US have imposed strict restrictions on Iran, so that foreign technology companies are not allowed to do business there.
The Iranian government wants the country’s data to be safe within the country. That is why she gives priority to indigenous companies. Jio has around 470 million users in India, while Iran’s Hamrah-E-VAVAN has about 66 million users (till 2022). Both 4G and 5G services are available in India while 5G is currently in trial phase in Iran.
Talking about data rates, the price of 1GB of data in India is around ₹ 10–15, while in Iran the same data is available in more than ₹ 100. India’s telecom companies give free subscription to OTT platform, while Iran has considerable control over it and access is limited.
