Whatsapp Cyber Fraud: Another case of cyber fraud has come to light in which a retired professor of Andhra Pradesh lost a huge amount of about Rs 2 crore. This fraud was done through a WhatsApp group, in which he was implicated by luring the benefits related to investment.
Well-known professor was targeted
According to the Times of India report, the victim Professor Dr. M. Battamainabne Munissamy, who has been a director and professor at Jipmer, Pondicherry, filed a complaint of this fraud on 18 June. He told that he was added to a WhatsApp group ‘H-10 Nuvama Health Group’. The group claimed that insider tips and expert guidance will be given from here. Since the professor had already invested in “Nuwama Funds” (earlier known as Edelweiss), he accepted this group as real.
Woman created a trap in the name of ‘Kangana’
In a short time, a woman contacted the professor in a private chat by calling herself “Kangana”. She claimed that she was talking on behalf of Nuwama and asked to register on a website. This website looked like real Nuwama funds but was completely fake.
The professor first invested Rs 10,000 first and was shown a profit of Rs 13,000. This little profit further strengthened his trust.
Fraud of 2 crores, bluff of 35 crores
After this, in five weeks, he invested about Rs 1.9 crore differently different times, thinking that he is investing money in high performing stocks. By the end of May, 35 crore rupees were shown in his account on that fake website. When he tried to withdraw Rs 5 crore, first a processing fee of Rs 32 lakh was sought, then it was reduced to 25%. In the hope that some amount was returned, they transferred Rs 7.9 lakh, but still the amount was not received.
Fudge and help of police
After getting upset, he approached again, he was linked to another person, who was calling himself a senior officer named “Ashish Kehir”. But the fraud continued and in the end the professor understood that he had been cheated. Then he complained to the police.
Be careful
This is not the first case. In the last few years, thousands of people have lost millions and crores of rupees by getting caught in the trap of such false investment. Experts recommend that no social media advertisements or WhatsApp group are seduced, especially when the profits look “very good”. Remember, the real financial institutions do not advise such investments on WhatsApp. Always be cautious about messages coming from unknown numbers or groups.
