Artificial Intelligence: Today Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI has become an important part of our daily life. Be it the face lock of the mobile, chatbots, or the smart navigation of Google Maps AI helps us everywhere. But have you ever wondered when AI was first used in the world and what were the features at that time? Let’s know the initial journey of Artificial Intelligence.
When and how AI started
The idea of artificial intelligence is not new. The dream of giving machines like humans is very old. In the 1950s, serious research on this began. The British mathematician Alan Turing wrote a famous research paper in 1950 in which he raised the question – “Can the machine think?” From this, the real seed of AI was sown.
1956 is considered the birth year of AI, when a conference took place at Dartmouth College, USA. This is the first time the word “Artificial Intelligence” was used and introduced as a future technique.
The features of AI used first
In the early stages of AI, machines did not do ‘thinking’ like humans, but they were programmed to do special work. There were some special features in the AI systems of that time. Logic and mathematical problems solving – Early AI programs could solve mathematical questions. For example, a program called Logic Theorist in 1955 was able to solve the complex mathematical theorem (theoram).
Playing chess – In the 1950s and 60s, the early computer programs could play chess with humans. This was a big example of AI as it included analyzing and estimating the tricks.
Learning Ability – Early AI systems could learn from data at limited levels. For example, a technique called Perceptron developed in 1958, which was the initial form of machine learning.
Trying to understand the language – In the 1960s, a chatbot called Eliza was created, who used to copy to talk to humans. Although its understanding was very superficial, it proved to be the foundation of AI based dialogue.
Comparison with today’s AI
Today’s AI has moved beyond the initial AI. Now it includes capabilities like deep learning neural networks, natural language processing and generative AI. Where earlier AI used to accept only fixed orders, now it can learn from itself and give new solutions.
