The Chetaks were a Marwari race. In the 16th century, the Marwari, Kathiawari and Sindhi breeds of horses were more popular in western India. The Chetaks were a distinctive and robust Marwari breed, distinguished by their curly ears, long face, high forehead and bright eyes. Marwari horses are known for their ease of movement even in desert terrains and steep Aravalli hills. Because of this, they were considered the most reliable horse for the rulers of Mewar.
According to historians, Chetak was not gifted to Maharana Pratap, rather Maharana Pratap bought it with his two brothers, Natak and Attak. These three horses were specially trained for war and possessed all the qualities of strength, agility, endurance and balance. Maharana Pratap gave the play to his younger brother Shakti Singh while keeping Chetak. Also, Attak was sent to a nursing home after sustaining a leg injury. There is no concrete historical record of how much Chetak was purchased by Maharana Pratap.
During the Battle of Haldighati in 1576, Chetak risked his life to protect Maharana Pratap. During the battle, Chetak’s leg was seriously injured by an elephant attack. Despite this, he carried his king on his back to safety. Historical stories say that Chetak even jumped into a 25 feet wide canal to save Maharana Pratap.
It is also said that after Maharana Pratap was rescued safely, Chetak fell and died. Moreover, the Chetak was considered not only a fast and agile horse but also a very loyal horse. It is said that Chetak was so aggressive that only Maharana Pratap could handle him.
