Do crocodiles never grow old?
According to scientists, crocodiles have a special ability known as ignoble aging. This means that even with age, they do not weaken like humans and other animals. Because of this, many people believe that crocodiles never age or can live forever.
Why do crocodiles die?
1. Starvation – Crocodiles can live without food for months, but if they go without food for a long time, they become weak and eventually starve to death. Sometimes, they die after going without food for even a year.
2. Fighting – Large male crocodiles are very territorial. They engage in fierce battles to defend their territory. These fights can result in serious injuries, infection and loss of hunting ability. According to scientists, about 30 percent of male crocodiles are killed in fights.
3. Human-caused deaths – Humans are the cause of most crocodile deaths. Every year thousands of crocodiles are poached for their valuable skin. It is estimated that about 60 percent of crocodiles are killed by humans.
Do crocodiles live 500 or 1,000 years?
So far, scientists have found no evidence that a crocodile has lived for 500 or 1,000 years. However, they live longer. Many crocodiles easily live to be 70 or 100 years old. In some rare cases, there have been reports of ages up to 120 years, but no more.

For example, they can remain motionless for hours because they are cold-blooded animals. To maintain their body temperature and conserve energy, they lie down for long periods of time. They can even go without food for months. By basking in the sun and expending little energy, they can survive for months without food. They also live in the sea. Although they are brown or olive in color, not green, they are called saltwater crocodiles because they can live in saltwater and swim hundreds of kilometers from island to island. Scientists believe that they use the position of the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field to return to their birthplace even after long journeys.
Birth of crocodiles and protection of their young
When babies hatch, they immediately recognize their mother’s voice. The mother carries them to the water in her mouth. Within minutes, they learn to swim. However, small crocodiles are very vulnerable and are easily preyed upon by birds, large fish or other animals.
