Expensive veggies: Tomatoes and potatoes spoil the kitchen budget

Mumbai, December 5

The high prices of tomatoes and potatoes have disrupted the household kitchen budget. Domestic vegetarian food became seven percent more expensive in November compared to last year due to the increase in the prices of both commodities. According to the monthly ‘Roti Rice Rate’ report of the rating agency CRISIL, the price of vegetarian thali increased by seven percent to Rs 32.7 on annual basis in November, while non-vegetarian thali has become more expensive by two percent.

The main reason for the costlierness of the vegetarian thali is the increase in the prices of tomatoes by 35 percent and the prices of potatoes by 50 percent. Last month, the price of tomato rose to Rs 53 per kg and potato to Rs 37 per kg. Apart from this, the prices of pulses also increased by 10 percent.

However, it has been said in the report that due to the arrival of new crops in the month of December, the prices of these commodities are likely to decrease. Due to increase in import tax, vegetable oil prices also increased by 13 percent in November. The relief is that the fuel cost has come down by 11 percent due to the reduction in LPG prices.

This continued to put pressure on the cost of domestic thali. The price of non-vegetarian thali also increased by two percent to Rs 61.5 last month. Meanwhile, the price of broiler chicken increased by three percent. Compared to October, the price of vegetarian thali was recorded two percent lower. In this, the price of tomato remained low by 17 percent per month. While the price of non-vegetarian thali remained stable. -News-Patiala
