A 10-year-old child died due to rat bite during treatment in a government hospital

A 10-year-old child undergoing cancer treatment at a government hospital was allegedly bitten on one of his toes by a rat. A hospital official said on Saturday that he has died. While the State Cancer Institute, where the boy was admitted on December 11, said the death was due to “septicemia shock and high infection” and not rat bite. The Rajasthan government has constituted a committee to investigate the matter.

Hospital Superintendent Dr Sandeep Jasuja said that the child also had fever and pneumonia. He died of high infection septicemia shock on Friday. Officials said that Medical Education Secretary Ambrish Kumar has sought a report from the Principal of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College.

According to a report published in a local newspaper, the child started crying shortly after being admitted. When his family members removed the blanket from under him, they found one of his toes bleeding from a rat bite. The family members informed the nursing staff present there, who bandaged the leg after giving first aid.

Jasuja said that he treated the child as soon as he received the information about the rat bite. He said that instructions have been sent to ensure cleanliness in the hospital premises. –News-Patiala
