A double blow to the unemployed in India

Gurpreet

Even after taking degrees, when employment is not found, smiling faces also wither. The number of unemployed is increasing day by day in the whole of India including Punjab.

As the population is increasing in our country, the unemployment rate is also increasing continuously. Although the government is taking various measures to reduce unemployment, the educated young generation is also being employed in the private sector, but the ruling party is not providing permanent employment.

Many government companies and institutions are being handed over to private hands due to which the unemployed youth are being exploited on a large scale. A few private companies even pay higher wages than government institutions in many places, but their conduct is poor and the looting is much higher than that of government institutions.

While private companies pay more to the unemployed, the working hours are too long to say the least. Due to the ever-increasing burden and social problems, wrinkles of distress are appearing on the faces of young people. Crores of educated youth of India are currently hitting the streets for employment.

While the youth spend lakhs of rupees to complete their education, they have to spend thousands of rupees just to fill forms etc. to get a job; When they are tired and do not get employment, their white day is a double robbery. Although the education of the youth does not go in vain, but when the youth who have good studies are pushed on the streets, it seems that the degrees obtained by the unemployed have gone to waste.

There was a period in Punjab when the educated unemployed took to the streets and burnt the copies of the degrees, but even this did not fall on the ear of the ruling party. Not only in Punjab, there are similar situations in the entire country. Recently, the unemployed were tortured in UP and Bihar as well. Job seekers got sticks. There are also news coming from many places that the government has recruited the youth but has not made them join the job due to which questions are being raised on the policy and intention of the government that what the government ultimately wants is that the unemployed Keep rolling on the streets?

It has to be said that before coming to power, every party claims that it will employ as many youth as possible, but after forming the government, all the claims of the ruling party start to look hollow; The party reneges on the promises made to the people. Instead of giving employment to the youth, the government engages in other activities.

If seen, news of scams in jobs on a large scale is coming from different states. The government is silent about the blatant exploitation of the youth by the private sector, although loans are being given by the government to strengthen the private sector. In the past, the ruling party of the country also advised the youth to fry pakodas and it was said that the educated youth should fry pakodas if nothing else is to be done.

Although frying pakodas is not a bad thing, but instead of giving permanent employment to the educated youth, advising them to fry pakodas is running away from one’s responsibilities. Every ruling leader from the street to the parliament makes the same claim that his government is employing the youth on a large scale; The leader does not even know about how many youths have been employed.

If we look at the rate of the growing number of unemployed, most of the governments around the world believe in the number of unemployed youth determined by the International Labor Organization and they try to make changes within themselves so that the youth can be more and more employed. More employment can be given. The opposite is happening in our country. Governments are not listening to anyone but are busy implementing such decisions which are playing with the educated class in broad daylight. Due to this, unemployed youths are on the streets and many youths have become so disturbed that they are taking paths like suicides.

Unemployment statistics are extracted based on the definition of employment by the International Labor Organization and how much of the population is employed. Unemployment in a country like India has always been a socio-economic issue rather than an electoral one. When the opposition attacks the government for not providing jobs, the government claims that it has created a lot of employment opportunities.

So, what do the statistics say? The government releases unemployment rate statistics every year. Unemployment is highest among the educated youth in our country. A recent report by the International Labor Organization claimed that 83 percent of the unemployed in India in 2023 were youth; In the year 2000 educated people among the unemployed were 35.2% which increased to 65.7% by 2022.

The report said that unemployment is the biggest problem among the Indian youth, especially those who have graduated and it is increasing continuously with time. Recently there is a new report of Periodic Labor Force Survey on employment data. This report covers data from July 2023 to June 2024. The report states that India has more educated unemployed. Accordingly, the unemployment rate among those who cannot read and write is 0.2%; Unemployment rate among 12th graders is less than 5%; The unemployment rate among those with diploma, graduation, PG or above is more than 12%.

Some experts believe that educated youth look for work based on their qualifications, which is why they have a high rate of unemployment. According to the report of the International Labor Organization, 46% of the people who have work are engaged in agriculture. This was followed by 12.2% of people involved in business, hotel or restaurant. The unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 29 has increased slightly. The youth unemployment rate in this age group was 10% in 2022-23, rising to 10.2% in 2023-24. It is 14.7% in urban areas and 8.5% in rural areas.

The way the number of unemployed is increasing and the way unemployment has picked up pace in the last two decades, the government should understand that if the unemployment rate is not controlled now, it will become a big bomb in the near future. It can be because the decrease in employment due to the growing population in the country, the increase in the number of unemployed is a threat to the country. Therefore, the government should employ more and more youth so that the educated youth can stand on their own feet and contribute to the progress of the country.
