He believes it should be used as an effective defense base. Gurlev is a staunch pro-Putin member of parliament. They made the demand after Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested Trump withdraw his claim to Greenland.

Gurlev added that Russia should also keep an eye on Spitsbergen, which is under Norwegian sovereignty. Russia has the right to pursue various economic endeavors, such as mining, under the Svalbard Treaty of 1920. Russia also has a commercial embassy here. However, military activities on the island are prohibited under international agreement. But Gurlev believes Russia should reverse this. In a TV programme, he said, ‘Spitsbergen is close to our northern fleet, which is important to us.’ It should be withdrawn from joint development and brought under Russian control and military bases should be built there.
