According to a report published in The Sun, Russian General Andrey Gurlev said that Trump and Putin should divide Greenland among themselves, not fight over it. But at the same time, Gurlev believes the Kremlin should take over Spitsbergen in the Arctic. It is a Norwegian island located in the Arctic, where military operations are prohibited. He believes it should be used as an effective defense base. Gurlev is a staunch pro-Putin member of parliament. They made the demand after Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested Trump withdraw his claim to Greenland.

Why is everyone clamoring for Greenland?
Gurlev Says If Trump Claims Greenland, Why Shouldn’t We? Greenland is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. It is one of the important trade routes of this region. Apart from this, it is rich in rare minerals. Both Russia and China want to gain control over the Arctic. Gurlev said, ‘We want Greenland and this is no joke.’ We need it very much. Why not take some money and settle this issue once and for all?” He said that in the worst case scenario, Trump could agree to split Greenland into several parts. It is clear that then Denmark will have no existence there.

Gurlev added that Russia should also keep an eye on Spitsbergen, which is under Norwegian sovereignty. Russia has the right to pursue various economic endeavors, such as mining, under the Svalbard Treaty of 1920. Russia also has a commercial embassy here. However, military activities on the island are prohibited under international agreement. But Gurlev believes Russia should reverse this. In a TV programme, he said, ‘Spitsbergen is close to our northern fleet, which is important to us.’ It should be withdrawn from joint development and brought under Russian control and military bases should be built there.
