At least 179 people were killed when a Jeju Air plane crashed while landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea’s southwest Muan County early this morning. Muan city is about 290 km from the capital Seoul. Regarding the cause of the accident, the National Emergency Situations Office said that the plane’s landing gear was damaged.
The National Fire Agency said that the rescue team is engaged in trying to evacuate people from the passenger plane of Jeju Air at this airport in Muan city. The transport ministry said the aircraft was a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet that crashed at around 9.03am while returning from Bangkok.
The fire agency said that at least 179 people died in the incident, including 83 women and 82 men. While 11 people could not be identified immediately. The rescue team has rescued two people, who are crew members.
In a video footage aired by YTN Television, the Jeju Air plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a concrete barrier. Muan Fire Brigade chief Lee Jeong Hyeon said the plane was completely destroyed in the crash and only the rear section could be identified from the wreckage. He said that the cause of the accident is being investigated from various aspects, including the aspect of birds hitting the plane.
