Hackers create fake profiles using your photo, location or post details and then use these fake accounts to cheat your friends or followers of money, send phishing links or cheat them by luring them into an emotional trap.
The first step to security on social media is to change your privacy settings. Go to your account settings and change your profile to private instead of ‘public’ so that only the people you want can see your posts. Use tools like Privacy Checkup or Off-Facebook Activity on platforms like Facebook to prevent apps and games from accessing your data.
Cyber security experts recommend never using the same password on multiple accounts. Create a unique and strong password for each account, using a combination of letters, numbers and special symbols. If you have trouble remembering your password, use a reliable password manager app.
To make your account more secure, turn on multi-factor authentication i.e. two-step verification. This will require an additional code or device verification on every login, making it difficult for hackers to access your account.
Many people leave old or useless social media accounts, but these accounts remain the target of cyber criminals. These get hacked and turn into zombie accounts which can be used for phishing or fraud. Therefore, before deleting such accounts, download the necessary data and then delete it forever.
If you have a habit of sharing everything on social media, then now is the time to exercise some restraint. Share personal feelings or everyday moments with trusted friends on a secure messaging app like Signal. If you like to express yourself, write your thoughts in a digital diary app or your phone’s Notes app instead of posting online. Remember, it is not wise to risk your privacy for a few likes or a little popularity.
