Bangladesh: Chinmoy Das did not get relief, next hearing on January 2

Dhaka, 3 December

Hindu spiritual leader Chinmay Krishna Das, who was arrested on charges of alleged sedition, has not received any relief. On Tuesday, a court in Bangladesh fixed January 2, 2025 as the next date for hearing the case. Chinmay Das, who is currently in custody, is expected to remain in jail.

Daily Star Bangladesh reported that the Chattogram court has adjourned the hearing on the bail petition of Chinmay Krishna Das till January 2. Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Saiful Islam fixed a new date for the hearing as the defense counsel was absent from the court. Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofizur Rahman later confirmed this information to Bangladesh media.

According to the Daily Star report, the accused was not produced in the court. Chinmay Krishna Das, belonging to Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was arrested in Dhaka on November 25. The arrests followed a complaint lodged by a local politician on October 31 accusing Chinmoy Das and others of desecrating the Bangladeshi national flag.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly criticized Das’ arrest and cancellation of his bail, with many at the community level demanding Das’ immediate release. In a post on ‘X’, ISKCON, Inc. said that she stands with Chinmay Krishna Das. –ANI
