Exactly one year ago, today. Bangladesh’s PM Sheikh Hasina left her country and fled. They had to give up in front of the students in front of the students against the reservation in government jobs.

Protests started regarding reservation in jobs

The Supreme Court of Bangladesh ordered the implementation of reservation in the country in June 2024. The reservation system in jobs in 2018 in Bangladesh was abolished. The court reinstated it as illegal and restored it.

During the protest in July, there was a conflict between the police-students.

Under this policy, 30 percent government jobs were reserved for families fighting independence in 1971 with Pakistan. There was resentment in families that led the freedom movement. Apart from this, 26 percent of jobs were allotted to women, disabled people and ethnic communities.

But in June 2024, the Bangladesh Supreme Court declared that decision illegal and implemented the reservation system. In July 2024, rules were brought to the Government University of Bangladesh regarding new pension reforms. A large number of faculty and students walked out.

Hasina said- protesters are Razakar

Protests against the reservation initially were peaceful, but a inflammatory speech by Hasina increased tension. He had said- these students are not ‘Razakar’, not traitors. The term was used for supporters of Pakistan during the freedom struggle of Bangladesh.

A total of 146 deaths were recorded in the violence by 22 July 2024.

The protests became so fierce that Bangladesh Students League, along with the police, started attacking the students with tear gas and bullets. The Rapid Action Battalion, paramilitary force was also included in it.

After this, the protests intensified and in addition to the students, common people also joined the Protest. Due to which the police and the army started more violent action.

Students emerged as big face

During this Protest, the video of university students was broadcast online. In this video, a student named Abu Saeed was killed, when he died, he was standing apart from the crowd and there was no weapon in his hand.

A day before his murder, Saeed shared a photo of Professor Shamsujoha, a young martyr at the Rajshahi University, who was shot and killed while saving students who were protesting in 1969. He wrote, Sir, we are in dire need right now, your legacy is our inspiration.

Three big student leaders emerged from this Protest, the first was Nahid, Abu Bakr Mazumada and Asif Mahmood, Nahid was a student of Dhaka University. Abu Bakr was a student of Geography Department at Majumada Dhaka University and according to The Front Line Defender he also worked on civil rights and human rights.

On June 5, after the decision on the High Court reservation, the goak along with his friends started the Students Against Description Movement.

Asif Mahmood was also a student of Language Studies at Dhaka University. By 1 August, the protest over arresting students increased and the protests intensified. On August 3, Asif appealed to the people to get out of their homes through Facebook and join the demonstrations.

All these were forcefully made videos to withdraw the movement. When he was in captivity, the Home Minister was claiming that he has talked about ending the movement on his own will.

When the matter opened, the anger of the protesters got angry. The protest increased so much that thousands of people took to the streets. He captured the Parliament House and the Prime Minister’s Office.

An order to shoot on seeing it was issued

On Sunday i.e. August 4, 2024, more than 90 people were killed in the protest, clashes between police officers and protesters increased and protesters asked Hasina to step down.

The government closed schools and universities after Protest and increasing protests. Curfew imposed and discontinued services like Internet and Telephone Network. Meanwhile, many students arrested the leaders and were forced to withdraw their demands.

After which the police released rubber bullets and tear gas at a large crowd of protesters at the Shahabag intersection of the capital Dhaka. In the north-western district Sirajganj, protesters also attacked a police station in which at least 13 officers were killed.

As soon as the protest, the officials ordered the ‘shooting on the sight of 6 pm on Sunday evening and imposed curfew. Police and military units were posted on the streets to restore the system, but thousands of people broke curfew and took out a march, while there were reports of clashes outside the capital.

The picture of the protest by morning changed by noon, the protesters began to hand over the flowers to the army and in return the authorities hugged the protesters, which changed the atmosphere and the Bangladesh’s Awam expressed happiness that the game of Hasina is now over.
