Bangladesh violence: A controversial incident has come to light amid increasing cases of atrocities on minority Hindus in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint general secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi burnt his wife’s Indian saree during an anti-India protest in Dhaka. During this he called for boycott of Indian products.

Rizvi protested against the alleged vandalism at the Bangladesh High Commission in Tripura and insult to the Bangladeshi flag. According to media reports, she publicly burnt Indian sarees and appealed to people not to buy Indian goods. He said, “We will not support those who have insulted our national flag by buying their goods. Our mothers and sisters will no longer wear Indian sarees.”

Appeal to boycott Indian products
During the demonstration, Rizvi also said that Bangladesh will not use Indian products like soap and toothpaste and will grow its own products like chilli and papaya if needed. Accusing India of undermining the sovereignty of Bangladesh, he said that the most peaceful and effective response would be to boycott products coming from India.

Message of self-reliant Bangladesh
Rizvi claimed that Bangladesh is self-reliant and can produce everything it needs on its own. He said, “We do not need Indian products. Instead, we should invest our resources to strengthen our economy.”

Impact on relations between India and Bangladesh
During the protest, Rizvi also targeted Indian leaders and media and accused them of spreading false news. He said that this is having a negative impact on the relations between the two countries. Also, while talking about respect for the sovereignty of Bangladesh, he said that Bangladesh will not tolerate any kind of wrong conduct.

Agartala incident: the root of controversy
Last Monday, an incident of alleged vandalism by some unknown people came to light in the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission located in Agartala, Tripura. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the incident and ordered action against the policemen concerned. Seven people have been arrested during the investigation of the incident, and the police have assured to take appropriate action.
