New Delhi: After the victory of the Indian women’s team in the ODI World Cup, the BCCI has opened its coffers. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to give Rs 51 crore as prize money to the women’s team, support staff and selectors. Earlier, there were reports that the BCCI would pay Rs 125 crore in prize money, but it turned out to be just a rumour.
Apart from the BCCI, the International Cricket Council (ICC) also announced a record prize money for this World Cup. A total of Rs 122.5 crore was disbursed. This was the first time in the history of the ICC World Cup (both men’s and women’s) that such an amount was given as prize money. The Indian team got about Rs 39.55 crore for winning the title.
The Harmanpreet-led Indian team won their first ICC trophy by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final. Deepti Sharma scored 58 runs and took five wickets in the final. He was named player of the tournament for taking 22 wickets and scoring over 200 runs, while Shefali Verma was named player of the final for scoring 87 runs and taking two wickets.
Indian captain Harmanpreet said after the match that the entire team deserves credit for this victory. The seasoned player, known as “Harry D” among her teammates, thanked the BCCI and the audience for their massive support. According to Herman, “We lost three games in a row, but the way we played after that, we knew we could turn things around. We believed in ourselves and stayed positive. This team deserved to win.”
