Dnyanesh Kumar, a 1988 batch IAS officer, took over as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India on 19 February. He is the first Chief Election Commissioner to be appointed under the new law ie the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners (Appointments, Conditions of Services and Term of Office) Act, 2023. His term will remain till January 26, 2029.

Apart from Dnyanesh, Vivek Joshi has been made the Election Commissioner. Joshi is the Chief Secretary of Haryana and an IAS officer of 1989 batch. At the same time, Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will continue in his post.

In the meeting of a 3 -member committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17 in New Delhi, it was decided to make Gyanesh Kumar the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also attended the meeting.

Dnyanesh Kumar became the first CEC after new laws

Prior to the implementation of new laws for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioner (ECS), the most senior of the remaining commissioners were usually appointed as the outgoing Chief Election Commissioner. However, Gyanesh Kumar is the first Chief Election Commissioner to get appointment under the new appointment process. Dnyanesh Kumar was the most senior Election Commissioner after the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar.

Gyanesh Kumar replaced Rajiv Kumar

Earlier, Rajiv Kumar, who held CEC post, retired on February 18, 2025. He took over as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on 15 May 2022. He was responsible for holding assembly elections in 11 states as well as the 16th President and Vice Presidential elections in 2022.

During the 4 -year tenure of Gyanesh Kumar, elections will be held in 20 states and 1 one union territory (Puducherry). It will start from Bihar and the final election will be held in Mizoram.
