High Uric Acid and Dal Myths: Patients with uric acid are often advised to limit their intake of lentils. Lentils contain purine, so excessive consumption is not advised. Doctors say that lentils are low in purines, and are safe to eat in small amounts. People with uric acid or gout can also comfortably eat a bowl of mung or lentil dal a day. Skipping lentils altogether is not good for health.
Is Dal Harmful for Uric Acid Patients: The number of people with uric acid is increasing rapidly, and young people are the most affected. Joint pain, swelling, mobility problems and gout are often associated with high levels of uric acid. In such situation, people are most confused about the diet. Especially regarding pulses, people often question whether they can increase uric acid. Let’s try to understand from the doctor what is the relationship between eating pulses and uric acid and how many pulses can uric acid patients eat daily.
Dr. Vice Chairman of Urology Department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. Amarendra Pathak told News-Patiala that all pulses contain some amount of purine. When purines are broken down in our body they form uric acid. That is why pulses are associated with uric acid. However, all pulses are moderate in purine content and eating them in moderation is not harmful. Simply put, foods like moong dal, lentil dal, lentil dal, gram dal, chickpea dal, rajma and chickpeas do contain purines, but the amount is much less than non-vegetarian foods, red meat or alcohol. So pulses are safe in small amounts.
Dr. Amarendra Pathak explains that eating too much dal can increase uric acid levels. Eating 3-4 bowls of lentils daily can cause this problem. However, uric acid patients can also eat a bowl of lentils daily. This does not harm their health. If you suffer from uric acid, it is not necessary to give up lentils completely. People with gout or high uric acid levels can also eat lentils in moderation. Moong and lentils are considered best for uric acid management.
Experts say that pulses are considered a superfood for the body. Apart from protein, they are rich in fiber, iron, vitamin B and potassium. Eating pulses strengthens muscles and helps control weight. Eating lentils improves digestion and heart health. Dal should also be consumed to control blood sugar. For all these reasons, pulses should be included in your daily diet.
