Canada News: After a long struggle and winning legal battles, the Surrey Police has finally taken over the reins of the city’s law and order from the Central Police. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Central Police) was stationed in Surrey for 74 years. With this change, Surrey has joined the list of select cities in Canada that have their own police boards. Norm Lapinski, the head of the police board, expressed satisfaction and happiness that the responsibility of law and order of the city was handed over to his police, saying that this will reveal the fear of police strictness in the minds of the anti-social elements and the sense of security in the minds of the citizens.

However, due to legal issues, it may take two years to dismiss the last employee of the Central Police. Out of the total 880 police personnel posted in Surrey, 446 are already Surrey Police recruits, but the overall command was with the Central Police, which has now been reversed.
The police board was established after council passed a resolution in November 2018 to establish Surrey Municipality’s own police board, but in 2022, due to new mayor Brenda Locke’s insistence in favor of a central police force, this popular demand was met with several legal challenges. Had to cope with fights and conflicts.

The stand of the provincial government in favor of the Surrey Police proved to be effective and the decision of the Supreme Court in favor of the establishment of the Surrey Police put a firm stamp on it. It should be noted that in Canada, police deployment and expenditure is the responsibility of municipalities.
