The Canadian Parliament has rejected a motion to declare the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as genocide, which was tabled by New Democratic Party MP Sukh Dhaliwal before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. After his motion was rejected, Dhaliwal said on social media that he moved a unanimous consent motion in Parliament today to recognize the crimes committed against Sikhs in India during and after 1984 as genocide, but some Conservative MPs and A Liberal MP opposed it.
As soon as Sukh Dhaliwal proposed a resolution to unanimously declare the 1984 Sikh massacre as Sikh genocide, many of the House of Commons protested, after which the Speaker rejected the resolution outright. Meanwhile, M.P. Chandra Arya alleged in the House of Commons that she was threatened by a fellow MP. Although Chandra Arya did not take anyone’s name in the House, but in the video uploaded on his X account, he can be heard taking the name of Sukh Dhaliwal.
Chandra Arya claimed that only by saying no, the resolution was rejected, but the report clearly states that many MPs opposed the resolution. Chandra Arya also tried to connect the issue of Sikh genocide with Khalistan supporters and invited Hindu Canadians to join the fray through a social media post.
The MP warned that the Khalistani lobby would once again try to pressure Parliament to declare the 1984 riots as genocide.
