In 2026, private candidates who provide exams from CBSE to 12th will no longer have an option for additional subject. This decision of CBSE has come without any prior notice. With this step, about 1.5 lakh private candidates will no longer be able to choose a multi -career option.

For many students, additional subject was not just the option, but also the eligibility required for entry in JEE, NEET and other higher educational courses.

In the year 2024, about 1.5 lakh candidates gave 12th exam from CBSE board as a private candidate.

Students are angry about this move of CBSE. On the social media platform Redit, a user wrote-

The board did not give any information about this step before. I am from PCB i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology Background. I thought that I would take maths as an additional subject, so that I would have a backup option of engineering when NEET does not come out.

The same student further wrote, ‘Form for private candidates was released on 13 September and the option of additional subject is missing in it. There is also no additional subject category in the registration form. In his place, categories of improvement and fellowers etc. have been given.

In 11th and 12th, students choose subjects from 4+2 formula

Hansraj Suman, a member of the Delhi Teachers Association, said that in 11th and 12th students choose subjects from 4+2 formula i.e. 4 subjects are core and 2 subjects are optional or additional. Core subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and English can be there. These may vary for different stream chokes, but English occurs for all.

Apart from this, 2 subjects students can take according to their will. This opens multiple multiple options for students. Also, they have the option to improve their score through additional subjects.

They understand this by example. A student chose Arts. Apart from this, he took physical education and home science as 2 additional subjects. On giving the exam, his marks did not get good in core subjects, but he scored a good score in additional subjects. Even after getting less marks than expected in core subjects, he got a good college based on the marks of additional subjects.

Also understand another example. A student chose Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It is accompanied by English compulsory. Apart from this, students took maths as additional subjects. For this reason, he can choose any field of both medical or engineering further.

Expert said- Board’s decision discriminatory

Hansraj Suman said that there is not much difference between private and regular candidates. Regular candidates study with the CBSE board by taking admission in affiliated school and they are registered in the board only through the school. At the same time, private candidates do not take admission in any school. They go to the Direct Board website and register and give exams.

The board’s decision is currently only for private candidates which are discriminated against. Examination is a means of testing students that should be the same for all. Separate rules for private and separate rules have no meaning. This will also reduce options regarding the career of students.

Many students ruined their full year

There are many students who dropped the year on the option of additional subject, but all are upset after the board’s decision to remove this option.

On the Redit, a user wrote, ‘I had dropped for NEET exam. This will be my second atampt of my NEET. I can no longer take a drop in front of it, so this time I decided that I will take maths as an additional subject, so that I can also give the exam of JEE, but now it is not an option. I also gave up preparations for NEET for JEE. Now I do not understand what to do.

CBSE helpline of no use

Students are constantly calling the helpline numbers of CBSE board, but no solution has been done to their problem. Some students said that the helpline has been asked to wait. At the same time, some students said that despite constant calls on the helpline, their phone was not picked up. A student wrote on the Reddit that he called and got an answer from the front that this year the option of additional subject would not come back.

Many students want to wait for the official announcement of the board, but they do not have much time. September 30, 2025 is the last date to fill the form. However, late submissions can be done by 11 October.
