* The biggest dam in the world worried India and Bangladesh
* 137 billion US dollars will be spent on the project
Beijing, 26 December
China has approved the construction of the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet near the Indian border, raising concerns in India and Bangladesh. This dam project is being described as the world’s largest infrastructure project, the cost of which is 137 billion US dollars.
The Chinese government has approved the construction of a hydroelectric project in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River (the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra), state news agency Xinhua said on Wednesday, citing an official statement. The dam will be built in a wide valley in the Himalayas, where the Brahmaputra river takes a major ‘U-turn’ and flows into Arunachal Pradesh and then into Bangladesh. Hong Kong’s ‘South China Morning Post’ reported today that the total investment in the dam could be more than 137 billion dollars.
Any other infrastructure project on earth, including China’s Three Gorges Dam, will be dwarfed by this dam. India’s concern has increased over the fact that this dam would give China the right to control the flow of water, and given its size and scale, it would allow China to supply huge amounts of water to border areas during hostilities. Will also make you able to leave. India is also building a dam on the Brahmaputra River in Arunachal Pradesh. -News-Patiala
India and China formed a panel of experts regarding water issues
India and China established an Expert Level Mechanism (ELM) in 2006 to discuss various issues related to transboundary rivers. Under this, China provides hydrological information on Brahmaputra River and Sutlej River to India during floods. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the talks between the Special Envoys for cross-border cooperation and exchange, including sharing of data on trans-boundary rivers, had been positive.
