- Christie Coventry Became The First Female President Of The ‘International Olympic Committee’

Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister Christie Coventry was elected 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday, 20 March. She is the first woman to reach the post and the first African. Coventry Swimming has a two -time Olympic gold medalist.
The newly elected President Coventry is currently in Zimbabwe Sports, Art and Recovery Ministers (from 2018).
The 41 -year -old Coventry will formally replace the current president Thomas Bak on 23 June 2025. His term will be 8 years old.
Christie Coventry is considered one of the world’s greatest backstroke swimmer (in which swimmer swimming in his back water). Indeed, Olympic and other international competitions include 4 main styles of swimming- freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
Christie Coventry is Zimbabwe’s most successful Olympic athlete. He participated in 5 Olympic Games (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016) and won a total of 7 medals. The seven medals have come in only two Olympics – Athens Olympics and Beijing Olympics. He won a total of 7 Olympic medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including 2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medal. He also set a world record at 2008 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

- There is no medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
- Gold in 200m backstroke in 2004 Athens Olympics, silver in 100 meter backstroke and silver in 200m individual medle.
- Gold in 200m backstroke in 2008 Beijing Olympics, silver in 100 meters backstroke, silver in 400 meter individual. In the same Olympics, he set a world record of 2: 05.24 minutes in 200m backstroke.
- There is no medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
- There is no medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
After the 2016 Rio Olympics, Christie Coventry retired from the swimming competition.
Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister is Coventry
Christie Coventry became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2013. Then after retiring, in the year 2018, Zimbabwe’s Government made him a sports, art and recreation minister. He is still working in this post.
In the year 2018, the Coventry became the chairman of the IOC Athletes Commission. Then in the year 2023, she became a member of the Executive Board of IOC.
On March 20, 2025, Christie Coventry was elected president in the 144th IOC session held at Costa Navarino, Greece.
Became the first woman to become IOC President
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President was 6 candidates against the co -covert in the election. These include Sebastian of Britain, Juan Antonio in Spain, David Lapartient of France, Prince Faizal of Jordan, Johann Ilyash of Sweden and Morinari Vatanabi of Japan.
Coventry became the first woman to reach the post of IOC President.
Sebastian was considered a strong contender for the post, but Christie was behind him and was elected president.
Coventry is the youngest to become IOC President
The Presidential election took place during the 144th IOC session held at Costa Navarino, Greece on Thursday, 20 March. In this, 49 (majority) out of 97 members voted in favor of the covantry. Coventry will hold the post of IOC president by 2033. He is the youngest to be elected on this post.
Christie will replace the outgoing chairman Thomas Bakh, whose term will end on 23 June 2025.
