The protest by leftist students in Jawaharlal Nehru University i.e. JNU turned tense on Saturday evening. They were protesting demanding registration of FIR against student union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). During this time there was a clash with Delhi Police.

Leftist students have accused Delhi Police of brutally attacking them. At the same time, Delhi Police has also detained JNU Students Union President Nitish Kumar.

Police detained 28 students

Left students were scheduled to march from JNU campus towards Vasant Kunj North police station on the evening of Saturday, October 18. However, the police stopped the students at the west gate of the campus by barricading.

During this, there was a scuffle between the students and the policemen. Police have taken 28 students into custody. These include 19 boys and 9 girls. At the same time, the police have accused the students that during the demonstration they broke the barricades and many policemen were injured in the scuffle.

There was a dispute regarding stopping the march

According to the police, there was a clash on the campus between left and right wing students on the day of Dussehra. The police spoke to the leaders of student organizations and promised legal action, but this action was taken after the students continued the siege.

Students were angry with the police action

The students of the left faction were angry over the police not taking action after the case of assault in the general body meeting on 3 October.

After the clash in JNU, the student union president was also detained.

The student union president released a video of his detention. In this he said that on the day of the meeting, ABVP people held me, the Vice President and other workers hostage for several hours. We complained to the police. Police came but ABVP beat us in front of Delhi Police.

Today, when we were expressing our protest, Delhi Police also beat us and tore our clothes. They have detained us but no FIR has been registered against ABVP yet.

Left’s allegation- Police protects ABVP

Left organizations allege that the police protects the students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and does not take action against them.

The organization says that action was promised but nothing has happened yet.

Students were demonstrating without permission

According to the police, around 6 pm, 70-80 students gathered at the West Gate without permission and started protesting.

The police had already put up barricades so that the protesting students did not proceed on Nelson Mandela Road.

But the students tried to break them. Six policemen were injured in this clash, including 4 men and 2 women. He was sent for first aid.

Police said- students scuffled

The students said that in the fight on the day of Dussehra, the police took only one side while the ABVP students indulged in violence. Police said that during the scuffle, some students also abused. Action was taken to control the detained students so that no major accident occurs. The university administration has appealed to the students to remain calm and follow the rules.

JNU administration said there will be investigation

The JNU administration has said that the matter is being investigated and strict disciplinary action will be taken against whoever is found guilty. Also, security arrangements have been beefed up on the campus to prevent such incidents in future. This incident has happened just before the student union elections, when all the student organizations are active and campaigning on the campus. In such a situation, this conflict can make the election environment more sensitive.
