India Cricket Control Board (BCCI) fought that the Ranji Trophy was not producing a strong player for international cricket. Many standards were one-way in which strong teams were easily defeated the teams. To create a strong competition, BCCI started a new zonal tournament. The team was built on regional grounds – North, South, East, West, and Central – and the first edition of the Dilip Trophy in 1961. The tournament was named in the name of the nephew Duleep Singh of Ranjit Singh Ranjit Singh Ranjit Singh.
