Cyber Fraud: In India, cases of online fraud are continuously increasing. Cyber criminals are now making the rich, but also the needy and forced people their victims. Recently, a woman from Udupi, Karnataka, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, became a victim of online fraud seeking help on social media for medical expenses and lost more than ₹ 30,000.
What is the whole matter?
According to the report of The Times of India, the victim is a cancer patient and, after being upset with the increasing expenses of treatment, she shared information about the bank account on social media and requested the people for financial help. On July 1, at around 10 am, he received a phone call in which a person speaking Kannada language started calling himself a representative of the ministry Raghavendra Swami Math. He claimed that he is calling on the instructions of Krishna Math of Udupi and financial assistance of Rs 2.90 lakh is being given to the victim.
But to get this amount, the woman was asked for Rs 29,900 as a “tax” before the woman. Relying on the name of the religious institution and the promise of help, the woman transferred this amount through PhonePe. After this, at the behest of that person, he sent Rs 4,000 more in two times.
The thug assured him that by 11:45 pm, 2.90 lakh rupees would come to his account and then call him. But even after the passage of time, when the money did not come, the woman realized the fraud and filed a complaint with the police.
Legal action and sections
In this case, a case has been registered under sections 318 (4) and 112 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023. Also, a case has been registered under sections 66 (c) and 66 (d) of the IT Act.
How to avoid such online fraud?
This incident is a warning for all the people who seek help on social media in economic or health problems. In such a situation, making sensitive information public can be quite risky.
Some ways to take precautions
- Never make a bank account or other sensitive information public on social media.
- If someone offers a large amount or donation, then check his identity thoroughly.
- If any organization asks for processing fees or tax in lieu of help, then become cautious. Real support institutions never demand money.
- In case of doubt, contact the official website or helpline of the concerned institution.
- Complain any suspicious call or transaction immediately in a cybercrime portal or nearby police station.
