Delhi Municipal Corporation launches campaign to identify migrant children

Last week, Delhi Municipal Corporation had ordered a campaign to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrant children in schools. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Deputy Commissioner BP Bhardwaj has issued instructions to the Director of Education Department in this regard. The Deputy Commissioner has instructed the Health Department not to prepare birth certificates for Bangladeshi migrant children. Also, the Assistant Commissioner of all zones has been asked to demolish any illegal construction done by Bangladeshi immigrants. Action taken report has been sought by 31st December.

Order of MCD Deputy Commissioner

Recently, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had also issued an order related to this to the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner of Delhi. In this, orders were given to identify Bangladeshi immigrants living illegally and take action against them. Since then, Delhi Police has been running operations in the slums, footpaths and illegal colonies of Delhi.

However, experts say that it is not right to give schools the task of identifying illegal immigrants.

Former Education Director YP Purang says, ‘According to the RTE Act, no child can be denied admission in school. How can a school detect fake Aadhaar cards which are very common these days? It should be the job of the police to identify illegal immigrants. No child can be denied admission till class 8.
