Current and former temporary employees of Maruti Suzuki Company of Haryana’s industrial city Gurgaon gathered at the DC office in Gurgaon and submitted their collective demand to the labor department challenging the illegal labor norms of the company. The employees have organized themselves under the Maruti Suzuki Temporary Labor Union, which was held in a meeting at Krishna Chowk, Gurgaon on January 5. The demand letter regarding the demands was also submitted to the company management on January 9. The labor department has scheduled a tripartite meeting with the company management and the union on January 31. The protestors also submitted a demand letter to the Haryana Chief Minister and announced a massive mobilization and labor march at IMT Manesar on 30 January. A working committee of representatives of temporary workers from various states and workers laid off from Maruti is spearheading the movement.
The workers have demanded an end to the practice of employing various categories of temporary workers in regular production at all plants of the automobile giant. Their demands include permanent employment for permanent type of work, equal pay for equal work, appointment of former and existing workers as permanent workers in all plants including student trainees at Sonepat and Maruti. It seeks to ensure useful and recognized learning for learners.
