What is HMPV?

India is closely monitoring the situation through all available means in view of recent reports of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China and has also requested WHO to share information on the infection in time. As a precaution, the number of laboratories testing HMPV cases will be increased and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will monitor HMPV trends throughout the year, the health ministry said.
The ministry said a meeting of the Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) under the chairmanship of the Directorate General of Health Services was held here on Saturday to discuss the situation. The meeting was attended by representatives of World Health Organization (WHO), Disaster Management Cell, Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP), National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) Division. . Hospitals including specialists from AIIMS-Delhi participated. The ministry said that after detailed discussions and based on current information, it has been agreed that the situation is not unusual considering the weather in China.
Kerala, Telangana are monitoring the situation
The cases of corona virus in India were first reported in Kerala. The governments of Kerala and Telangana on Saturday said they are closely monitoring reports of large-scale cases of viral fever and respiratory infections in China and there is no need to panic at this time.
