Under normal circumstances, they do not cause any problem, but when they swell or blood starts accumulating in them, then problems like pain, swelling, bleeding or lump appear. This is a very common problem and it is believed that more than half the population suffers from piles at some point in their life.
Actually, this disease mostly affects people above 45 years of age, pregnant women, overweight people, those who suffer from frequent constipation or diarrhoea, those who lift heavy weights and those who sit in the toilet for a long time.
Sitting on a chair for a long time does not increase the risk of piles, but sitting on a toilet seat is considered more dangerous. Actually, sitting on the toilet seat increases the pressure on the pelvic floor and blood starts accumulating in the veins around the anus. This pressure can cause piles.
125 people (age 45+) were included in this American research. They were asked questions regarding smartphone use, eating habits and physical activities while on the toilet. Then he was examined through colonoscopy.
66% people were found using phones in the toilet. Of these, 37.3% people used to sit in the toilet for more than 5 minutes. Whereas among those without phones this figure was only 7%. The risk of piles was found to be 46% higher among those who used phones in the toilet. The interesting thing is that in this study no direct relationship was found between straining and piles. That means the real danger is sitting in the toilet for a long time.
This is not the first time such a claim has been made. Research conducted in Türkiye and Italy in 2020 also found that sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes increases the risk of piles manifold. You can also avoid piles by adopting some things. Increase the amount of fiber and water in your food. Do not take your phone or any kind of distraction to the toilet. Keep the time spent sitting in the toilet to a minimum. If you notice problems like blood, pain or lump during bowel movements, consult a doctor immediately.
