Phone Expiry Date: Often when we buy a new smartphone, we think that it will last for many years. But do you know that every phone also has an expiry date? Yes, just like any electronic device has a fixed age, similarly your phone also has a life span. The only difference is that there is no date written on the box but there are some ways to understand and calculate it.
What does the expiry date of the phone mean?
The expiry date of the phone does not mean that it will suddenly stop working. Actually, it reflects the period of time till which your phone provides better performance, security updates and software support. After this the phone gradually starts slowing down, battery backup reduces and system security starts weakening.
What is the average age of a phone?
Generally the age of smartphones is considered to be between 3 to 5 years. However, it entirely depends on how you use your phone. Flagship phones (like iPhone, Samsung S series, OnePlus Pro) usually perform well for up to 5 years. Whereas mid-range or budget phones (like Redmi, Realme, Poco) work well for about 3 years, after which their performance starts declining.
How to know if your phone is near its expiry?
There are some signs which indicate that your phone is about to complete its lifespan.
- The phone starts hanging or slowing down again and again.
- Battery drains very quickly or shuts down suddenly.
- Apps start crashing again and again.
- The phone has now stopped receiving security or software updates.
- Hardware things like charging port or speakers start responding.
If most of these problems have started appearing in your phone then it is a sign that now the time for upgrade has come.
How to calculate life expectancy of phone
Some basic things can be kept in mind to estimate the expiry of the phone.
- A phone of any brand usually gives updates only for 3 to 5 years after its launch.
- Now many companies like Samsung and Google are providing software support of up to 7 years to their phones.
- Every battery has a limit of approximately 500 to 800 charging cycles. If your phone is charged daily, its capacity starts decreasing in about 2.5 to 3 years.
If your phone is not able to run new apps or games properly then it is also a sign that it is nearing expiry.
