1. Sachin got membership of Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC): On December 27, former Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar received honorary membership of the prestigious Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC). This is one of the oldest sports clubs in Australia. It was established in 1838. MCC has the responsibility of management and development of Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) informed about Tendulkar’s membership by tweeting on its social media account.
- The record of scoring most runs at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is in the name of Sachin Tendulkar.
- Sachin has scored 449 runs in 5 Test matches at MCG at an average of 44.90 and strike rate of 58.69, including 1 century and 3 fifties.
- Earlier in 2012, Tendulkar was awarded the ‘Order of Australia’, one of Australia’s highest honours.
- MCG is currently hosting the fourth Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.

2. Dr. Sandeep Shah appointed Chairman of NABL: On December 27, the Central Government appointed Dr. Sandeep Shah as the Chairman of the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories i.e. NABL. It is a board of Quality Council of India (QCI).
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Friday, December 27 appointed Dr. Sandeep Shah as the Chairman of NABL.
- He is Prof. Subbana will replace Ayyappan.
- Dr. Shah is a renowned medical professional. He has over 30 years of experience in healthcare, pathology and diagnostics.
- He did BJ. He has done MD in Pathology and Bacteriology from Medical College, Gujarat.
- He is the founder of Newberg Supratech Reference Laboratories.
- NABL works to build trust in products and services for consumers, businesses and regulators.
- Quality Council of India (QCI) is the parent body of NABL.

3. Now you can make UPI payment through prepaid card: Now prepaid card holders can also make UPI payments and withdraw money from third party mobile apps. Reserve Bank of India i.e. RBI gave its permission on 27 December. With this decision, UPI can be used for payments through prepaid payment instruments (PPI) like gift cards, metro rail cards and digital wallets.
Through this policy, RBI wants to make digital payments (especially for wallet users) more user friendly.
- Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) is a type of financial instrument that you can use for online shopping, bill payments, peer-to-peer transfers, travel expenses and gift giving.
- PPI is a type of prepaid card or stored value card, which includes smart card, magnetic strip card, mobile wallet and paper voucher etc. PPI is not like your debit or credit card and it is not directly linked to your bank. In this, the user can manage his expenses with the help of PPI, without directly linking it to the bank account.
- Till now, PPI users could use their wallet only through the UPI which was available on their wallet issuing app.
- The full name of UPI is Unified Payment Interface, through which money transactions are done.
- For UPI service you have to create a virtual payment address. It has to be linked to the bank account.
- After this you do not need to remember the bank account number, bank name or IFSC code etc. The payment provider simply processes the payment request according to your mobile number.
4. Former Prime Minister Late. Memorial to be built in the name of Dr. Manmohan Singh: Former Prime Minister Late. A memorial will be built in the name of Dr. Manmohan Singh. The Union Home Ministry gave this information today i.e. on 28th December. The ministry will soon allocate space for the memorial.
Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge had written a letter demanding a memorial to be built in the name of the former Prime Minister.
- Earlier, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had died on the night of 26 December at the age of 92.
- Today i.e. on 28th December, his last rites were performed with state honors at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi. His mortal remains were brought to Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi on an army cannon train.
- Here all three armies saluted him. After this, the funeral rituals were completed after state honours.

5. Highest ever coal production in the country in 2023-24: India achieved its highest ever coal production of 997.826 million tonnes (MT) in FY 2023-24. Its production has increased by 11.71% compared to 893.191 MT in 2022-23. The Union Coal Ministry gave this information on 27 December.
According to the Coal Ministry, under the Integrated Coal Logistics Plan, the government has set a target of producing 1.5 billion tonnes of coal by financial year 2030.
- The ministry has supplied 963.11 metric tonnes of coal till December 15, 2024.
- This shows an increase of 6.47% compared to last year.
- In this, 792.958 metric tons of coal was obtained for generating electricity, which was an increase of 5.02% compared to last year.
- At the same time, a growth of 14.48% was seen in non-regulatory sectors i.e. NRS, in which 171.236 metric tons were supplied.
- Between January 1 and December 18, 2024, 16,838.34 acres of land was acquired for subsidiaries of Coal India Limited.

6. Hockey India League started in Odisha: Hockey India League (HIL) started from today i.e. 28th December in Rourkela, Odisha. It is starting again after a gap of 7 years. The inaugural match of the tournament took place at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Raulkela. The first match will be between Delhi team SG Pipers and Visakhapatnam team Gonasika.
The final match of Hockey India League will be held at Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi on 1st February.
- Women’s Hockey League is also starting for the first time, in which 4 teams will play from January 12.
- Women’s teams will play matches at Ranchi Hockey Stadium from 12 to 26 January.
- The matches of the Hockey India League men’s tournament will begin from December 28 and will be played daily at 8:15 pm. On a day where there are two matches, the first match will start at 6:00 PM, followed by the second match at 8:15 PM.
- The matches of Hockey India League 2024-25 will be telecast live on DD Sports and other channels of Doordarshan network.
- Viewers can also watch the live stream on Prasar Bharti’s new OTT platform Waves. Apart from this, there will be live telecast of the matches on SD and HD on Sony Ten (English), Sony Ten 3 (Hindi), and Sony Ten 4 (Tamil and Telugu).
- Live stream of the matches will be available on Sony LIV app and website.
- Tickets are free for hockey fans coming to watch the matches in Ranchi and Rourkela.

- In the men’s HIL, teams have been placed in two pools – Pool A and Pool B.
- Pool A includes – Delhi SG Pipers, Shrachi Rd Bengal Tigers, Surma Hockey Club, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers. Whereas, Pool B has Gonasika, Hyderabad Storm, Tamil Nadu Dragons, UP Rudras.
- Each team will face each other once in the first stage, then move on to the second stage. In the second phase, every team will play each other in their respective pools, in which the top 4 teams will reach the semi-finals.
7. Nitish Reddy became the youngest Indian to score a century in Australia: Nitish Reddy scored a century against Australia in Melbourne on 28 December. With this he became the youngest Indian to score a century in Australia. Earlier this record was in the name of Sachin Tendulkar.

- There was a partnership of 127 runs between Reddy and Washington Sundar for the eighth wicket. This is the second highest partnership for the eighth wicket in Australia. Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh are at number one in the list.
- Due to this partnership, India made a comeback in the fourth Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Earlier, India was in danger of follow-on on the third day of the match.
- India scored 358 runs for 9 wickets in the first innings at stumps on the third day in Melbourne. Nitish Reddy is unbeaten on 105 and Mohammed Siraj is unbeaten on 2 runs.
- Nitish made his international debut in the T20 series played against Bangladesh in October 2024.
- Then in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Nitish got a chance to debut in the Test match and scored innings of 41 and 38 (not out) in the very first match.

History of 28th December: On this day in 1885, 62 years before independence, AO Hume, a retired officer from Scotland, founded the Indian National Congress. AO Hume was never given the status of founder of the party while he was alive. After his death in 1912, AO Hume was declared the founder of the Congress. Even though the Congress Party was founded by an Englishman, its President was an Indian. The first president of the party was Calcutta High Court barrister Vyomesh Chandra Banerjee. The first session of the party was to be held in Pune, but cholera was prevalent there at that time. For this reason it was done in Bombay (now Mumbai).
