Japan’s local meteorological agency said a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Monday, prompting a tsunami warning for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. At 9:19 p.m. local time, the Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake’s magnitude was less than 7 on the Japanese earthquake scale in parts of Miyazaki Prefecture.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning for several areas, but there were no reports of damage or casualties. However, a 20 cm high tsunami was observed in Miyazaki after the earthquake.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the depth of the earthquake was 37 km. Japan’s earthquake monitoring agency NERV said the quake occurred in the Hyuga-Nada Sea. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck Miyazaki Prefecture at 9:29 p.m. local time. In the hardest-hit areas, the quake was less than a 5 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7. A tsunami warning has been issued for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.
