South Africa won the 2023–25 World Test Championship by defeating Australia.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has opposed the plan to convert the World Test Championship (WTC) into a two-tier (two-tier) model.

The ECB believes that if England’s performance deteriorates for some time and the team goes into the second category (Division-2), it will not be able to compare them with big teams like Australia and India-which are their most important and profitable matches.

ICC has constituted committee In fact, the ICC has recently formed a working group, headed by former New Zealand player Roger Twozing. The group is working on measures to improve this tournament before the next WTC bicycle starting from 2027. Two-level system (where top and lower level teams will play in different divisions) this time has been a big topic of discussion.

ECB says not to play with India-Australia is not acceptable ECB president Richard Thompson said, ‘If England goes through a bad phase and goes into Division-2, will we not play with Australia and India? This is not acceptable. ‘

He admitted that WTC has given Test cricket a new identity, but needs further improvement. According to him, the WTC can be further improved by timely changes and better scheduling – it is not necessary that Test cricket is divided into two parts. Thompson also pointed out that cricket is going to be involved in the 2028 Olympics, which could lead to major challenges in July.

Test teams will be divided into 2 groups with 2 tier systems.

Kickrate Australia said- small countries will benefit, then you will support it Cricket Australia’s CEO Todd Greenberg also spoke on the issue. He said that it is the responsibility of big teams to help small countries strengthen in Test cricket. He said, ‘If two-level models give better resources and opportunities to small countries, then I am ready for it. But if it causes damage, I will not support it.

What is 2 tier system in Test cricket The ICC plan is to decide the big and small cricket boards together that the world Test Championship i.e. the WTC cycle starts from the future, then 2 tier systems are applied in it. At this time 9 teams are playing in WTC, but ICC wants 12 teams to be there, but 6-6 teams are in Tier-1 and Tier-2. Tier 1 teams play 5-5 day matches and Tier 2 teams will play 4-4-day Test. The team that does well in Tier-2 and promoted it in Tier-1 and the team that performed poorly in Tier-1 should be demoted and sent to Tier 2.
