Eleven candidates won unopposed in the disputed election of the cooperative society

Despite the tense atmosphere during the first day of the controversial election of the Co-operative Society Ghanuri Khurd, the concerned department and the police administration breathed a sigh of relief as eleven candidates from two villages won unopposed. It is to be noted that instead of the first election process of 6:5 ratio of Ghanori Kalan and Ghanori Khurd, this election was mired in controversies due to the way of struggles since the month of March when the people of Ghanori Khurd passed the election with 8:3 ratio under the new rules. Amanpreet Singh and Assistant Returning Officer Deepinder Singh arrived from the department as Returning Officer to conduct the election, while ASI Satwinder Singh, Hauldar Manjinder Singh and others arrived from Sherpur police station. A total of 12 members of the Ghanori clan in the society based on two villages filled the papers, but due to the efforts of Sarpanch Amritpal Singh, former chairman Ratinder Ratan and Jaggi Singh, four candidates of the said village – Darshan Singh, Major Singh, Balveer Singh and Gursevak Singh Amrik Singh, Avtar Singh Kaka, Gurpreet Singh Mukhya, Natha Singh, Nachhatar Singh, Jasmail Kaur, Satpal Singh Sattu, Paramjit Singh Roda etc. were unanimously elected members of the society. Similarly, Balveer Singh, Gurjant Singh and Mahinder Kaur (three from Ghanori Khurd) emerged victorious after two candidates including a woman from Ghanori Khurd withdrew their papers.

Earlier, Pargat Singh of village Ghanori Khurd and others raised objections against a woman candidate but the department rejected them and the objecting party withdrew Sarabjit Kaur’s papers in displeasure and claimed to fight a legal battle.
